EDDIE DONNALLY HAS LIVED A MOST UNUSUAL LIFE
In 1984, while writing for the Dallas Morning News, he became the only former jockey to win an Eclipse Award for Newspaper Writing. He has been a horse racing television show producer and host, professional fund raiser for Racetrack Chaplaincy of America, ordained minister with a Doctor of Ministry degree, and is a professional hospital and hospice chaplain.
A jockey for 19 years, he rode in over 10,000 races at 54 tracks, winning an estimated 1,200. He was once indicted for sports bribery after a botched race fixed by Boston’s infamous Winter Hill Gang. Its leader Whitey Bulger was convicted of killing 11 persons. He lived for a time between the FBI who wanted him to testify against gang members and the gang who threatened to kill him.
On December 16, 1996, a Los Angeles area holding cell filled with what he is convinced was God’s Shekinah Glory, causing him and 11 other prisoners to ask Christ to take over their lives. He left jail to begin his ministry career at the Los Angeles Dream Center, where he met and married his wife, Sandi Steele, and in less than five years was licensed as a Foursquare Gospel minister. In late 2014 he and four other former jockeys founded a group named Jockeys and Jeans, which has to date raised over $3.85 million for their severely injured brothers and sisters.
While a jockey, he published over 100 articles in a score of newspapers and magazines, including the "Washington Post” and “New York Times," and their “Sunday Magazine.” His testimony has been published in magazines and books, including "Chicken Soup for the Recovering Soul,” discussed on radio shows and featured on "The 700 Club.” He and his wife appeared on several Christian Television Network shows. Nearly 12,000 have watched his testimony on his YouTube Channel. He blogs and several are on this site.
His Bio, “Ride the White Horse: A Checkered Jockey’s Story of Racing, Rage and Redemption” has sold over 10,000 copies and gained 82 reviews on Amazon with 80% rated four or five. A sexually abused adolescent, he went back to college in his 60s to earn his Doctorate, chiefly to understand why following a divorce, he sank into illicit sexual relations, attempted suicide, was in two psych wards and became addicted to crack cocaine before redemption came inside a jail’s holding cell. He has taught his course, “Healing from Sexual Abuse” in churches, rehab centers and prisons. He has shared his testimony in at least 50 separate prisons in four states. He also speaks in churches, recovery conferences, and substance abuse rehabs such as Celebrate Recovery and Teen Challenge. He regularly preaches to the homeless at the New Orleans Mission.

I really enjoyed this. It was a fast read because Eddie Donnally kept the pace fast and so it was a page turner. As I have read on other reviews, the author referred to biblical truths throughout and you could see how the ideas behind the story fitted well with scripture. The end battle kept the reader on their feet and I certainly look forward to the next book in the trilogy. This book would be great for teens either for Christians or those seeking their way - IT MAKES YOU THINK. This would compete well with all those other fantasy teen books which are out there. I hope that the author gains a following.

THE GOLDEN ALTAR is so much more than just a novel about horse racing because it puts the reader right in the thick of the action. Author Eddie Donnally, a former jockey, horse racing journalist and now a Christian pastor, puts the reader directly into the jockeys saddle, describing the surreal sensation of riding half-ton Thoroughbreds at speeds of 40 mph through narrow passages fraught with danger for both horse and
rider.
But THE GOLDEN ALTAR is not just an educational experience about horse races. It reveals everything you probably never knew that routinely goes on behind the scenes --where some races are won -- or lost -- before the horses ever set foot on the track. It is a fast-paced thriller of action, greed, deceit, lust for power and money, crime, romance and ultimate redemption, centered around a mysterious colt of unknown pedigree but gifted with incredible speed and stamina. It all leads to a date with destiny in the Kentucky Derby, carrying the hopes and dreams of a jockey struggling with addictions, a mob-connected owner, his daughter who trains the colt, and a persistent detective hellbent on uncovering their "scheme" of deception.to run a "ringer" in the Derby -- a colt with a different identity from the actual horse of that name.
The characters are always trying to stay one step ahead of those trailing them wherever they go, risking their lives to carry out their nefarious scheme.
I couldn't put this book down once I began reading it, and I doubt you'll able to put it down, either, once you start turning the pages.
THE GOLDEN ALTAR definitely belongs in the winners circle of horse racings finest works.

...I wouldn't be editing other people's books. WOW!! This book has it all. Not only is Rev. Donnally the king of one-liners--the man has an outrageous wit--he writes with a dramatic flair that encompasses every emotion imaginable. This book is fun while being a serious read that exposes the dirty underbelly of thoroughbred horse racing, a sport I love. There is loss in this book, sadness and triumph. It will have you smiling and crying right along with the characters.
I'd love to see the author turn this book into a series. There are a couple of jockeys here that I'd love to see get books of their own, especially the very likeable Dolan, along with several other backstretch characters whose stories I'd love to read. And of course, I'd really like to see what the future holds for Mickey and Kat.

When I read, Ride the White Horse, I felt suspended. There were so many profound moments where you actually stayed. You stayed more than you did in your real life. The story of a man, who at his lowest points in life, finally found a light that turned his life around is something a lot of people can relate to. I became an addict to this book. I couldn't put the book to rest and whatever I read, stayed in my mind for minutes, hours
and even days. Traveling through the pages, you never knew what was coming. Every chapter has its own story that made it captivating and reflective. I never wanted it to end. I would highly recommend this book to anyone. I found light.

WOW!! Although I have never been on a racehorse, I felt like I just got off one when I finished this book!! I have met the author and heard some of his testimony first-hand. He and his wife Sandi are lovely people, both doing God's work today. As I read this powerful testimony, I was blown away by the gut-wrenching, raw, vivid details of the struggles, confusion, pain, shame, despair, desperation, and finally transformation,
freedom, and desire to give back to the God who revealed the depths of His LOVE and POWER to Eddie (please excuse the multiple nouns, one just wouldn't do it!). God reveals Himself in many ways, and I do not doubt what happened in that jail cell. To the naysayers, I ask you to look at his life after this encounter, for that will show you this was real. His ways are higher than ours, so don't try to limit God with expectations. I devoured the pages, stunned that all of this could happen to one man, and touched by how much of my life was like his (before and after Christ)! What humility to share the darkest parts of his life with such openness. Yes, in one edition there are some grammatical errors, but there is charm in its imperfection, just like us! The chapter style is unique and clever; I enjoyed it after I got used to it and read deeper into the meat of the book. There is so much power to reach and help people when the mask comes off; I applaud you Eddie for your bravery and for trusting us with your story.
Jesus said, "The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly" (John 10:10). It would be great to follow Eddie and Sandi's story as it unfolds, because I am certain that while never easy, they now have an abundant life.

Compelling, Finely Crafted Tale
This book follows the life story of former jockey Eddie Donnally from his earliest memory as a child to his most recent days. The way the author crafts his narrative--and the story itself--are what set it apart from other autobiographies. As Donnally chronicles his life,
there is an unusual blending of utter candor with storytelling artistry. Also, the format of the book brings a dimension to the narrative that enriches the reading experience.
There are four "tracks" to the book, each dealing with a different aspect and time period of his life. It stimulates my imagination to, in a sense, have four stories developing within one story that shed light on different periods of Donnally's life. The events that unfold in the various tracks augment and complement one another, culminating into an inspiring conclusion. I feel like I truly know the man after reading this book. As a believer on Jesus Christ myself, I was attracted to this work and intrigued with reading this man's personal story of redemption. He holds back nothing, honestly sharing the darkest, foulest points in his journey. Then, like pulling away a thick curtain from a window, the sunlight of his redeemed life explodes on the scene, as the narrative switches over to his life today. This is an absolutely compelling account, and Donnally's creative writing and vivid depictions make you feel like you're "there" experiencing it with him. It was fascinating to see the behind-the-scenes life of a professional horse jockey with all of its intricacies. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading a real-life account of an amazing journey. Whether you have a personal faith in Christ or not, you'll find this a great read.

Remembering my world as it was and still is!
As a widow of a thoroughbred Jockey (he rode for 30 yr. before his death) Eddie's book is right on the money. Very easy to read and said in his own words which makes everything flow smooth. His definitions of racing terms peppered through out the book are done quick and not a lot of wordy words so you can continue with the great but sometimes very scary and sad story. I could not put it down and had tears in my eyes with memories of my times with some of these riders and ooh so many more who had to reduce to ride (make riding weight) and what it did to their bodies and lives, families and children. My father-in-law was a rider too and when I married my mothers-in-law’s first words to me were "It;;s not easy being married to a jockey" and then explained. But I loved my man and stayed. Then also found my Lord and Savior through those trials and
very bad times. He stays with me aways. I raise Eddie up for his "hang in there" faith and let God do His work on him and the very important work he is doing as a chaplain for the racing industry which has been forgotten for years. Men and women workers who live on the backside and don’t stray far from there have been a "lost" generation for generations. GOD KEEP SANDI AND EDDIE IN YOUR PALMS AND HOLD THEM TIGHT AS THEY DO THE HUMAN IMPOSSIBLE AS VESSELS OF YOUR WORK.

HEALING FROM SEXUAL ABUSE
This is a subject he knows experientially, physiologically and spiritually. As an adolescent he was molested by a stepbrother and in his 60s returned to college to obtain a Doctor of Ministry degree, chiefly to learn why he became so despondent he tried to commit suicide, was in two psych wards, became addicted to illicit sexual encounters and crack cocaine. When he saw God’s Shekinah Glory in a San Pedro CA holding cell on Dec. 16, 1996, he found forgiveness for his abuser and has been in full time Christian Ministry since. He has shared his training in churches, rehab centers, prisons, and on his YouTube Channel.
Statistics show that up to 50% of the homeless, and incarcerated males were sexually abused. With women; 70% of those in prisons have suffered sexual abuse. There is no greater physiological indicator of homelessness and incarceration. He considers it his ministerial duty to help others heal as God healed him. PRISON MINISTRY
In 2019 Eddie and wife Sandi purchased a motorhome in Florida and set out for Texas. He left positions as a PRN chaplain at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater FL and his working 20 weekend hours for Suncoast Hospice. He planned to speak in 20 prisons but was told by a Texas prison minister who knew the prison system there, it would never happen. He spoke in 30. And miraculously when they returned, both his positions were still intact.
He has also preached in prisons in Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana, bringing the total to at least 50. It’s fertile ground for salvation and at least 700 came to know the Lord as Savior. He is still active in the prison ministry, and said, “I will continue as long as I can walk and talk. I declare the following verse over myself every morning when I wake up.”
Isaiah 40:31.“But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.”

Videos also include his street ministry, which while sometimes dangerous are important to him and his wife. They started ministering in the streets shortly after he left the jail cell and began living at the Los Angeles Dream Center where he met and married Sandi Steele. Twenty-seven years later, God called him back to preaching on the streets. Working under the New Covenant Fellowship Church in nearby Metairie, you can meet him and his evangelical crew preaching and ministering to the homeless in the famous New Orleans Jackson Square. They preach and pray among fortune tellers, tarot card readers and Voodoo Bone readers. They also feed, clothe and preach to the homeless and share the Gospel with the hundreds who flock to the nationally known landmark. They have led many to Christ and placed several in local Christian rehab facilities. Donnally said, “Though the Lord has always protected us, we have been confronted by satanists, cursed, often given the one finger salute, and I even had whiskey thrown into my eyes. But I know God is blessing our group because of the persecution.”

JOCKEYS AND JEANS
To raise funds for his fellow jockeys who no longer ride racehorses but wheelchairs, Donnally and four other former jockeys formed the all-volunteer organization in late 2014. He served as President for a short time then nominated Barry Pearl, who was President until resigning in June 2023. Donnally. Vice President during those years, became Interim President when Pearl retired. Through an annual charity event and annual stallion season sale, the group raised $3.85 Million for Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund. The charity pays a $1,500 stipend to 55 permanently disabled jockeys. From February of 2024 until February of 2025 Jockeys and Jeans raised a single year record of $458,000. Donnally resigned in March 2025 to commit more time to his evangelical ministry but became one of its Ambassadors who advocates for the cause to aid disabled jockeys
